www.econstor.eu Norm enforcement in the city: A natural field experiment

Extensive evidence from laboratory experiments indicates that many individuals are willing to use costly punishment to enforce social norms, even in one-shot interactions. However, there appears to be little evidence in the literature of such behavior in the field. We study the propensity to punish norm violators in a natural field experiment conducted in the main subway station in Athens, Gree...

Social Norms and the Enforcement of Laws∗

We examine the interplay between social norms and the enforcement of laws. Agents choose a behavior (e.g., tax evasion, production of low-quality products, corruption, harassing behavior, substance abuse, etc.) and then are randomly matched with another agent. There are complementarities in behaviors so that an agent’s payoff decreases with the mismatch between her behavior and her partner’s, a...

Targeting Enforcement to Improve Compliance with Environmental Regulations

By targeting enforcement efforts on specific segments of the regulated community, greater compliance with environmental regulations can be achieved. In this paper, the inspection minimizing targeting scheme with two groups is derived. Firms are moved at random into the target group, while escape from the target group occurs only when an inspection reveals the firm is in compliance. The optimal ...

However, the inefficient behavior often cannot be suppressed in equilibrium among those with the lowest income due to the ineffectiveness of sanctions against those in the society with the least to lose. We demonstrat...
